Firstly we must apologies for the lack of blogs over the last frew days! Our itinerary had been full on and a lack of free WiFi in our Vancouver Hotel didn't help matters. So to continue, on our return from the Lake Louise Gondola we returned to the hotel, sat outside for a while chilling and admiring the view and one final visit to the Gold Lounge for coffee and cookies. About 3pm were we met by our next guide for the short transfer to Banff. He took us via Bow Valley Lake for another photo opportunity. The hotel in Banff was OK but not quite up to the Fairmont Gold standard. Decided to go for a nice stroll around Banff and found a nice restaurant for dinner, as we had a fairly early start the next morning we decided that an early night was in order, our body clocks are still catching up. New day, a good but basic breakfast set us up for a sightseeing tour with a slight difference. Linda our guide and driver for this tour concentrated more on the history of the area ...
To continue the story, we were picked up from the railway station and taken to our hotel. As the train was late we didn't have a lot of time to see anything that evening so we went for a bite to eat in one of Jasper's many restaurants managing to dodge most of the showers. We chose the Fiddle River restaurant which was recommended to us by our travel agents, Lynda had a pasta dish with scallops and prawns and Roger tried the meat loaf, both of which were really nice. Both of us were looking forward to a good nights sleep in a bed that wasn't rocking and rolling! Next morning we had an 0815 start on our nature tour to Maligne Lake with a cruise on the lake. Chuck our driver and guide was a very knowledgeable man and had some strong opinions on how the National Park should be managed especially the situation relating to the pine beetle and managing the environment with fire. First stop was the Maligne Canyon a really spectacular 49 m deep gorge. A short walk reveals ...
Having experienced the heavy traffic in Vancouver city we decided that another early start was the best option. Checked out and picked up car before 7 am and were on our way to the Horseshoe Bay Ferry terminal to get the ferry across to Vancouver Island. This drive was uneventful until we arrived at the ticket booth. Roger managed to frighten the life out of both of us and the lady issuing the tickets when he hit the accelerator pedal instead of the brake pedal, fortunately there wasn't anything in front of us and the nice lady came out of her booth her comment in a broad Canadian accent and said with a big smile "I bet that scared the crap out of you, don't try to reverse, just stay there and I'll sort your ticket out". This is the route the ferry takes - Ed A cautious drive onto the ferry and we were parked and made our way up to the restaurant for well earned breakfast. The crossing was very pleasant and disembarking was quite easy. A short and easy...
