Our itinerary described this as follows "Today you make the short yet beautiful drive to Tofino and it is an adventure in itself". This has got to be the biggest understatement ever! Please google "Pacific Rim Highway" to get a full description of this amazing stretch of highway if you don't believe us. (Here is a link to a YouTube video, of someone driving said highway. It has been sped up so only runs for 20 minutes. Maybe Lynda might like a reminder of what it was like! BCH4 always makes it on to dangerousroads.org too! - Ed) We decided to stop at a place called Coombs Market where along with a full range of groceries and an excellent breakfast of which we indulged they also have a herd of goats on their roof! Further down the road we stopped at a beautiful section of old-grove trees known as Cathedral Grove, amazing western red cedar trees. As we drove higher into the mountains the rain became heavier, the hairpins sharper, the uphills steeper an...
The view from our room is stunning and the water way is busy with all types of boats moving through the channel between the main island and one of the hundreds of others which scatter this part of the Pacific Ocean, along with plenty of sea planes that not only cater for the tourists, of which there are still quite a few, but also the small isolated 1st Nation Communities that live on the surrounding islands. Had an interesting evening meal in a place called Wolf in the Fog , which consisted of Fried Rockfish and Deep Fried Herring for starters and then a delicious piece of Halibut which we shared for main course. Tuesday morning was an early start as we had our first Whale Watching trip booked! Following a quick safety brief we soon set sail for our 3 hour cruise around the local water ways. Our target species for this trip at this time of the year was the Grey Whale. We saw 3 whales, but didn't get any really good shots of them along with sea otters, seals and a...
On arrival at the iconic Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise Hotel we were less than impressed when we had to wait for a bell-hop and trolley to take our luggage. The prices this place charges one would expect not to have to wait! Chuck fetched a bell-hop for us who whisked our luggage away saying it would be placed in our room. The entrance and reception area are huge with guests and members of staff rushing around, we identified a check-in area and gave our names to the nice young lady. Imagine our surprise when she informed us we had been up-graded to the Fairmont Gold accommodation package and because of this we could if we wished proceed directly to the 7th floor and continue our registration there. We were both a bit overwhelmed and asked that lady to continue to book us in anyway. We eventually found the right elevator and proceeded to the 7th floor where we were met by a very pleasant young lady who proceeded to welcome us and explain all the perks of Gold Service. Guests st...
